Rural Roars
Bringing big laughs to small places, Rural Roars has quickly become one of Surrey’s most unexpected and delightful community gems. Run by Grantley’s own Lynne, Business Development Manager and long-time champion of all things local, this pop-up comedy club travels from village halls to tucked-away venues, delivering top-tier stand-up to audiences right on their doorstep. With its friendly atmosphere, brilliant line-ups, and a mission to make live comedy accessible to everyone, Rural Roars has become a much-loved fixture for those looking to share a great night out, discover new talent, and enjoy the unique charm of Surrey’s rural communities.
How did Rural Roars first come to life, and what inspired you to bring a travelling comedy club to local villages and towns?
Rural Roars started as a simple idea: if people can’t easily get to great comedy, why not bring great comedy to them? I’d performed in plenty of rural spaces over the years and saw how hungry local communities were for live entertainment, so creating a “pop-up” comedy club felt like the perfect fit.
What makes Rural Roars different from a typical night at a comedy club?
The intimacy of a village venue completely changes the energy - audiences feel part of the show rather than just spectators. We mix established comics with rising stars, keep the format fun and relaxed, and lean into that warm, community-driven atmosphere you don’t get in big city venues.
You’ve performed in all sorts of rural venues - what’s the atmosphere like at a Rural Roars show?
There’s a lovely sense of occasion; people genuinely look forward to the night and often know half the room, which gives the gig a brilliant buzz before it even starts. Some halls become instant favourites, the ones where the laughter rolls around the rafters, and memorable moments usually come from audiences who aren’t afraid to play along
From your perspective, what role does something like Rural Roars play in strengthening local communities?
It gives people a reason to gather, chat, and share a proper night out close to home. More than entertainment, it becomes a social anchor - something regular and joyful that brings different parts of the community together.

Your next show is on 10th December at Wonersh Memorial Hall - what can people expect from the night?
A packed evening with 4–5 top-notch comedians, about two hours of laughter, and that “comedy on your doorstep” magic we love. It’s friendly, fast-paced, and perfect for anyone who wants a big night out without trekking miles.
Do you have any standout acts or moments from past shows that hold a special place for you?
There have been comics who’ve absolutely lit up small rooms - the kind of sets you wish everyone could’ve seen. And then there are the spontaneous gems: an unexpected audience interaction, a running joke that takes on a life of its own, or a whole room laughing so hard it feels like the walls are shaking. Absolute faves have been the audience members who have listed their occupations as a natural horsehair upholsterer, the owner of a guinea pig hotel and feline dentistry….. only in the country.
When you’re not busy bringing laughter to local halls, what other hidden gems or local places do you love to explore?
I’m always drawn to cosy cafes or village pubs with a good fire and a proper local feel. Plus, I’m ALWAYS on the lookout for new venues! Please do get in contact at rural_roars@outlook.com, or visit our website www.ruralroars.com.
