Haslemere Tennis Club

With Wimbledon season in full swing, it feels only fitting to shine a spotlight on a local tennis gem. Tucked away in the heart of Haslemere, this friendly, community-focused tennis club has become a hub for players of all ages and abilities. Since its formation, Haslemere Tennis Club has grown into a welcoming and dynamic space for social tennis players, budding juniors, and seasoned competitors alike. With a packed programme of events, coaching, and community partnerships, it’s no surprise that new members are joining all the time.

We caught up with the club's Chair to find out more about the story behind Haslemere Tennis Club, what’s on offer, and why it continues to play such a valuable role in the local area and community

When was the Haslemere Tennis Club first formed and what does it offer the community?

The club was established in 1995 by a small team with a vision, and the financial commitment, to create a tennis club for the Haslemere community. Built on the site of former municipal courts, the club has developed into a well-run, inclusive space that promotes ‘tennis for all’. While a few original public courts remain, it’s the club’s well-maintained, floodlit courts and community feel that really sets it apart.
Today, the club offers something for everyone, whether it’s relaxed social sessions, team competitions, or simply turning up and having a hit. It’s all about encouraging participation, welcoming players of all standards and ages, and building a space where tennis can be enjoyed for fun, fitness, or more competitive play.

What can members expect from joining the club?

Members can enjoy access to a wide range of options, from informal, spontaneous games to structured events. Courts are available to book in advance, or you can turn-up-and-play, all with free floodlighting. There are four weekly social mix-in sessions open to anyone who can rally, held on two weekend mornings and two midweek evenings, with no booking needed.
For those looking to compete, the club supports three men’s and women’s regional teams, along with two veterans’ teams, complete with training and practice sessions. Regular tournaments run throughout the year, culminating in the highly anticipated Summer Championships held in July.

What’s your favourite part about running the club?

Taking on the role of Chair came from a desire to get involved in creating something meaningful. It’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of a facility that offers so much, both socially and in terms of sport. A members’ club like this doesn’t run on its own; it relies on volunteers to manage everything from facilities and events to community outreach and communications. Being part of the behind-the-scenes team has really deepened my appreciation for how much the club gives back, and how committed the members are to keeping it thriving.

Can you talk about some of the additional benefits of becoming a member?

Beyond the courts, the club offers a rich coaching programme for players at every stage. Adults can join beginner courses, Rusty Racquets sessions, and a Shot Clinic to build confidence and improve technique. Cardio Tennis is also available for those looking to get active while enjoying the game. Private one-to-one or group coaching is available throughout the week.
There’s a strong commitment to junior development too. Kids’ coaching takes place six days a week, with extra sessions added due to rising demand. Holiday tennis camps are hugely popular, and juniors have their own events, including a mini-Wimbledon tournament in July and regular parent-and-child competitions.
The club also embraces its role in the wider community, partnering with groups like the local Beaver Scouts, and supporting a summer of coaching for pupils from Woolmer Hill School. Trial sessions are available, and the door is always open to new players to come and give the sport a try for themselves.
And there’s more to come, an exciting new addition for members is the introduction of Pickleball, a fast-paced, sociable sport that’s ideal for players of all levels and is a fun way to stay active.
Whether you’re returning to tennis after a break, looking for friendly competition, or simply want to get involved in a welcoming, well-run club, Haslemere Tennis Club offers the perfect place to play.
